GURPS Cyberpunk
Definitions
- Amigdulatic Necrosis (AN) - The plague of '09.
A disease that causes cell death in and around the Amigdula region
of the brain, and damage to the endocrine system. In initial stages
of infection, causes fearlessness and rampage. Late AN symptoms include
grossly swollen lymph nodes and endocrine glands, increased/abnormal endocrine
activity, death follows in approx. 1 month. Total course time approx.
3 months.
- Artificial Consciousness (AC) - The natural progression
of AI technology. A system that does more than just create the illusion
of thought, but actually do think.
- BioComp - A small computer usually imbedded in your back
that links your neural interface and any other cyberware into your brain.
- Brain Box - Brand Spanking new hardware that allows you
to upload a person's consciousness onto a machine. This machine in
return could remote control a robotic body or just float around cyberspace.
- Chip Reader - Small device that you plug into your neural
interface that allows you to plug in skill chips or other chips. It
has a short cord and a bioadhesive so that you can attach the device to your
back. Skills Chips are usually limited and a person can only handle
one skill chip at a time. However most Chip Readers have an extra slot
for a non-skill chip to be inserted.
- Cyberdeck - The machine that facilitates the connection
between your wetware and your computer's hardware. This is purchased
in addition to a computer. It's function is to be a loading
zone for Icebreakers and other hacking related programs, also controls the
translation of the online world to the visual representation in cyberspace
(dependant on the EM you loaded onto your cyberdeck).
- Digital Drug Imprinter (DDI) - The special machine that
allows pushers to encrypt/decrypt programs for transfer to a person's DD
Unit. Also allows the pusher to set the DD Unit timer. Only the
top of the DD dealing ladder has one of these. They send limited versions
of a DDI to the lower level pushers so that none of the full featured DDIs
get out of their control.
- Digital Drug Unit (DD Unit) - The evolution of the Drug
Box. Small spherical device that plugs into your neural interface.
DD pushers give you a free DD unit, but charge you to change the drug
program loaded on it or reset it's timer. This allows the dealing of
digital drugs to be as or more profitable than real drugs. The DD unit
itself is almost impossible to open without damaging the internal circuitry,
so nobody really knows much about how the timer and drug programs are encrypted.
- Drug Box - Drug boxes are already old technology. They
are simple machines that plug into a neural interface and produce drug-like
effects dependant on what program is loaded into the system. They cause
no physical side effects, but people can become very psychologically
addicted. Drug Boxes are very rare because of the invention of the
DD Unit that allows pushers to control distribution of a digital drug. DD
pushers have actively sought after and destroyed most Drug Boxes, making
them very valuable.
- Memory Drives - A special drive that can be purchased
(expensive) that plugs into a cyberdeck allowing the user to record recent
memories. Saved onto a small reflective card.
- Neural Interface - A plug located at the base of one's
skull that facilitates electronic data transfer between a machine and your
bodies BioComp.
